Rotations and Locations

Fellows will have access to extensive training opportunities through Rushford and the Greater Hartford Healthcare system. Our primary training location is the Rushford facility in Middletown, Connecticut.  Located on the Connecticut River, the Middletown location includes a withdrawal management (detox) unit, residential rehab unit, intensive outpatient (IOP), and outpatient services. The patient population in Middletown is extremely diverse and rewarding, and the addiction medicine faculty comes from various primary disciplines, including psychiatry, internal medicine, OB/GYN, and emergency medicine. In addition to providing on-site addiction and mental health services, fellows will also have continuity patients that they see via telemedicine at Rushford Stonehaven, an intermediate-level residential treatment facility.

Fellows will additionally rotate through a large variety of practice settings to develop a broad-based addiction medicine training. Locations include:

  • The Ridge, a brand new withdrawal management and residential rehab facility in the wooded hills of eastern Connecticut.
  • Hartford Hospital’s addiction medicine consult service.
  • Hartford Hospital’s inpatient pain management service.
  • Hartford Hospital’s community care clinic includes patients with co-occurring HIV, as well as the post-hospitalization bridge clinic.
  • Hartford Hospital’s high-risk OB/GYN clinic.
  • Root Center, the largest regional opioid treatment program (OTP, i.e. methadone clinic).
  • Rushford in Meriden, which includes child psychiatry, crisis supportive housing, community outreach, drug court, and other critical aspects of the addiction treatment landscape.
  • HAVEN, the healthcare professional treatment and monitoring program in Connecticut.
  • Telemedicine recovery groups through Rushford Avon.

Additionally, fellows have access to numerous elective experiences through Hartford Healthcare’s expansive resources, which allow for significant customization of the educational experience. For example, in the recent past, fellows have chosen to take additional time in child and adolescent psychiatry, research, and national-level policy advocacy. Fellows have also been involved in system-wide quality and equity improvement initiatives within Hartford Healthcare.
